My Father Said a Female Child Is a Half Child

In this era and time, there are still some people with the mentality that a female child isn't important.

Take my father,
for example. He is of the notion that a female child is a half child. Considering the fact that he has seven children, and 5 of them are girls, his thoughts are still the same.

He once talked about a pastor whose wife kept giving birth to girls. He went into prayer to complain that he doesn't want any female child. Ever since then, there hasn't been any female child in his lineage.

Now I know you're going to ask what lead to this statement.

Well, it began this way. My sister-in-law gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and has the grandfather he had to go and see his first grandchild. On getting back from their place, he said, "I gave them #50,000, had the child been a boy, I would have increased it." "Abo omo lomo obirin." Meaning "A female child is a half-child."

My sister and I just stood there staring at him like what the hell is wrong with you. I just hoped he didn't say that to them when he got there.

I know my father isn't the only one with this outdated mentality. There are lots of people still thinking this way. In fact, some areas still treat female children as burdens.

You judge a baby girl when she is still little. However, you should know that the little girl is different from the woman she will become, and the only way she will get there is through her loved one's encouragement and not being treated less than what she is.
